Simple Steps for Closing Your Pool

Protect your pool during the winter from corrosion, stains and scale build up by following the procedures below.

Climates vary by region, so ask your local authorized dealer for winterizing instructions particular to your area.

  • Get a complete analysis of your water by taking a water sample to your authorized dealer. Then use your dealer's instructions to balance your pool's water.
  • Continue to brush your pool's walls, vacuum your pool's floor and skim your pool's water. If you have tile or vinyl, use a cleaner. Don't forget to empty your pump and skimmer baskets after every cleaning session.
  • Clean or backwash your filter with a filter cleaner and degreaser. Remember to follow the instructions on the label.
  • Shock your pool, then run your pump for a few hours to spread the chemicals throughout your pool.
  • Add algaecide to kill any algae growing in your pool, pour in metal contaminant remover and run your pump so they're evenly distributed throughout your pool.
  • Lower the water in your pool until it reaches the winter-time level recommended by your local UltimateSM-approved dealer.
  • Continually drain water from your pump, filters, heaters, chlorinators, hoses, pipes and other such pool equipment. Ask your dealer if you should protect the pipes and equipment with a non-toxic, swimming pool antifreeze. Ladders, offline chlorinators, pumps and skimmer baskets should be stored until spring.
  • Cover your pool with a quality cover to prevent leaves, dirt and debris from getting into it.

If you decide to leave your pool open during the winter, follow the steps below for optimum pool performance:

  • Run your pump a frew hours a day, or run it continously if the temperature gets below freezing.
  • Keep your normal pH and minimize your free chlorine levels.
  • Protect your pool from leaves, dirt and debris.
